Which jump leads to choose?
Cross-section and current
The larger the engine and the lower the temperature, the more current the starter draws. When comparing leads, look above all at the cross-section of the copper core — it determines how much current the lead can carry without a large voltage drop. For diesels, vans and trucks choose 16–25 mm².
Length and clamps
- 4 m: enough when the vehicles can be parked close together.
- 6 m: gives extra reach when the batteries are on opposite sides of the vehicles or access is difficult.
- Clamps: the smaller A33 fit car and van battery terminals; for large batteries check the jaw size.
Rubber insulation
Rubber stays flexible at low temperatures, so the leads are easy to unroll in winter — when they are needed most.
Connection order
Both vehicles must have the same system voltage (12 V to 12 V, 24 V to 24 V). First connect the positive terminals with the red lead, then the black lead to the negative of the good battery and to the engine ground of the vehicle being started, away from the battery. Disconnect in reverse order.
