How to choose a trailer connector and cable?
7-pin or 13-pin
Cars and light trailers with a 12 V system use 7-pin or 13-pin sockets. The 13-pin connector has separate circuits for, among others, the reversing light and permanent power. When the vehicle and trailer use different standards, a 13/7 or 7/13 adapter connects them — without modifying the wiring.
24 V connectors for trucks and semi-trailers
- Type N and S: two 7-pin 24 V connectors — N handles basic lighting, S additional circuits such as the reversing light. N and S plugs and sockets have a reversed pin layout so they cannot be confused.
- ABS and EBS: 5-pin (ABS) and 7-pin (EBS) connectors serve the semi-trailer's electronic braking system.
- ADR 15-pin: a single 15-pin connector replaces the N+S pair; 15 to 2x7 (7N+7S) adapters link both standards.
Coiled and by-the-metre cables
A coiled cable stretches when the combination turns and retracts at rest. Choose a length of 4 m or 4.5 m to suit the distance between the tractor socket and the semi-trailer socket. For building or repairing wiring there are 7- and 13-core YLY-S cables and a flat YLYp-S 2x0.75 mm² cable for marker lamps, sold by the metre.
