How to choose an automotive bulb?
Voltage: 12 V or 24 V
Cars and most vans have a 12 V system, trucks, buses and many agricultural and construction machines — 24 V. A 12 V bulb in a 24 V system will quickly blow, and a 24 V bulb in a 12 V system shines noticeably weaker. The voltage is marked on the base or glass of the old bulb.
Type and base
The type designation (e.g. H4, P21/5W, W5W) defines the bulb shape, base and power — the easiest way is to read it from the old bulb or the vehicle manual. BA15s and BAY15d bases look similar but are not interchangeable: BAY15d has two contacts and offset pins.
Single or dual filament
- Dual filament: H4 (dipped and main beam) and P21/5W (stop and position light in one lamp).
- Single filament: H3, R10W, W5W, W1.2W and festoon bulbs — one function per bulb.
Replacement
Headlamp bulbs are replaced in pairs so that both sides shine equally. Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with your fingers — grease from the skin shortens its life.
