Warning lamps for tractors and machines – types, colours, regulations
A warning lamp signals the presence of a vehicle or machine that may be an obstruction or a hazard to other road users. They are used on agricultural tractors with wide implements, working machines, road service vehicles and emergency vehicles. The regulations specify precisely when their use is mandatory — and when it is prohibited.
Text updated 29.10.2026 – legal basis: the Polish Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym, Dz.U. 2024 item 1251, as amended) and the regulation on the technical conditions of vehicles.
Types of warning lamps
The basic division is between the beacon and the strobe — what distinguishes them is not the technology but the angular coverage:
- Beacon – emits light all around (360°), visible from all sides of the vehicle. It can be rotating (a mechanically revolving reflector) or LED flashing (LEDs arranged around the housing). This is the most common type used on tractors and agricultural machinery.
- Strobe – emits a very intense, short flash in one direction. Where several sides of the vehicle need to be covered, several units are mounted at different points.
Mounting methods
- Fixed mounting – connected directly to the electrical system; standard on specialist machines and road vehicles.
- Magnetic mounting – the lamp is attached to a metal surface of the roof or body and powered from the cigarette lighter socket. It requires no modification of the wiring and can be moved between vehicles.
We describe specific models in the guides Magnetic warning beacon – how to choose and when you may switch it on and Strobe for a tractor – which one to choose and where to mount it.
Where they are used
- Agricultural tractors transporting wide machines (combine harvesters, seed drills, spreaders) — when the width of the combination exceeds 2.55 m
- Machines and vehicles working on or near the road (excavators, rollers, snow ploughs, refuse trucks)
- Abnormal (oversize) vehicles in transit
- Emergency vehicles (ambulance, fire brigade, police) — only during an operation
- A towed vehicle – as an additional warning that improves visibility; the lamp does not replace the marking required by the regulations, e.g. the warning triangle
When an amber warning lamp is required
Legal basis: Article 54 of the Polish Road Traffic Act (Dz.U. 2024.1251). Yellow flashing signals must be emitted by:
- vehicles carrying out cleaning, repair or upgrading work on the road
- vehicles which, due to their design, load or behaviour on the road, may endanger road safety — this applies, among others, to tractors with implements exceeding a width of 2.55 m
§ 38 of the regulation on technical conditions specifies: a ballast tractor pulling a trailer wider than 2.55 m must be fitted with an amber warning lamp visible from all sides from a distance of at least 150 m.
A tractor driving on the road without wide implements, with an ordinary trailer, has no right to switch on an amber warning lamp — unjustified use of a beacon is punishable by a fine. During field work off public roads, switching on the beacon is permitted.
The other mandatory lighting for tractors, machines and agricultural trailers is collected in the article Lighting and marking of agricultural vehicles, machines and trailers, and an overview of all tractor lamps in Tractor lighting.
Colour and the regulations
- Yellow (amber) – the only colour permitted for non-emergency vehicles. It signals an obstruction or hazard.
- Blue – exclusively for emergency vehicles during a rescue operation. Private use of a blue beacon is illegal.
- Red and blue together – vehicles leading and closing a convoy of emergency vehicles.
Type approval
Every warning lamp approved for use on public roads must have two approvals: ECE R65 (requirements for the function and intensity of the light) and ECE R10 (electromagnetic compatibility). The markings in the form of the letter E in a circle should be visible on the lamp housing or lens. The LED warning lamps in the zemot.com.pl range have the required documentation — you will find the full range in the Warning lamps category.
