Lighting and marking of agricultural vehicles, machines and trailers

A tractor, trailer or machine going out onto a public road must meet specific lighting and marking requirements. What is always mandatory, what depends on vehicle width, and when do the regulations allow an exception?

Note: this article describes the regulations in force in Poland. Requirements in other countries may differ – check your local rules.

Mandatory marking of agricultural vehicles and trailers – what the regulations say

A tractor, trailer, fertiliser spreader or slurry tanker going out onto a public road must meet specific lighting and marking requirements. I have collected them in one place on the basis of the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 31 December 2002 on the technical conditions of vehicles and the scope of their necessary equipment (Journal of Laws (Dz.U.) 2024, item 502).

Text updated 29.10.2026 – consistent with the regulation as worded in Dz.U. 2024, item 502, as amended.

Mandatory lighting on all agricultural vehicles and trailers

Depending on vehicle width

  • Front position lamps – mandatory on tractors; on trailers required at a width of 1.6 m or more
  • Front and rear end-outline marker lamps – required when the width of the vehicle or trailer exceeds 2.1 m

Mandatory lighting on tractors and self-propelled machines only

  • Dipped-beam headlamps
  • Main-beam headlamps – if fitted, they must work
  • Rear reflectors other than triangular

Mandatory lighting on trailers only

  • Front reflectors
  • Rear triangular reflectors

The requirements for ordinary trailers – including car trailers – are collected in the article Trailer lighting – regulations, and the mounting dimensions in How to position the lights on a trailer.

Exceptions

  • A trailer without its own direction indicators is permitted if it does not obscure the direction indicators of the towing vehicle.
  • Vehicles whose design prevents them from exceeding 10 km/h are exempt from the obligation to fit stop lamps and dipped-beam headlamps (§ 45 ust. 1 pkt 1 lit. a of the regulation).

Wide vehicles – amber warning beacons

If the width of the tractor, machine or trailer exceeds 2.55 m, the tractor must be fitted with at least one and no more than ten amber warning beacons. They must be positioned so that their light is visible from every side of the vehicle.

When you may switch on a warning beacon and which type approval it must have is explained in the article Roof beacons and strobes – regulations.

Plates and additional marking

Every agricultural tractor and slow-moving vehicle – and every trailer designed to be coupled to these vehicles – should be marked with a triangular slow-moving vehicle plate. The plate is not required if the vehicle is part of a combination and is not the last vehicle in it.

If parts of the vehicle or the load protrude beyond its outline, it is worth marking them with red-and-white retro-reflective stripes. The regulations do not explicitly require this, but it increases visibility – especially when working at dusk.

Work lamps – not mandatory, but useful

Work lamps are not covered by type-approval requirements – fitting them is voluntary. However, for night work in the field, in the forest or in the farmyard they make a real difference. At zemot.com.pl you will find LED work lamps for tractors and agricultural machinery in various power ratings and beam angles – spot and flood.

How to choose work lamps and the rest of the tractor lighting is covered in the guides Tractor lighting and Halogen and LED work lamps for tractors – how to choose.
